Bliss in the Abyss

Met my buddies Steve, Bill and Mike on a sunny, windy day. We hopped in and swam a whole bunch to an unspoiled reef we know, where we descended. It's one of our favorites, and a big secret. There's no mooring ball there so the reef hasn't been ground away by thousands of boat divers.

The reef is gorgeous, the fish are plentiful and big, and we saw great stuff. Mike saw a 6' barracuda. I saw a school of ~100 Moorish Idols . (I didn't know they schooled!) I saw a pair of Hawaiian Damselfish spawning and found a cleaner wrasse doing business under a ledge. We could hear the whales singing.

For the next dive, we followed the Kewalo Pipe almost to the end. I never realized how beautiful the reefs at the end are. Maybe because this time, I wasn't working!

There was a big group for the night dive, including my friends Brittney and Lauren. They don't take this diving stuff any too seriously, and they like to sing Disney songs while we swim out on the surface. (Tonight it was the Thing-A-Ma-Bob Song from Little Mermaid.)

The group was led by a couple of divemaster candidates who were new to leading night dives. Under their "leadership" the group got scattered from hell to breakfast. My buddy Dave, their instructor, was on hand to tell us that when you lead a night dive:

  • Go slower
  • Then go slower still
  • Turn in wide, slow circles
  • Don't stop, and above all:
  • GO SLOWER

My friend Veronica faced her fear of sharks by meeting one in person, I saw a colossal "broomtail," casualties were light and we all learned the Harlem Shuffle.
